The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die

Apparently, it's all over for me. I've crossed over to the dark side, and there's no hope. 2 days in a row I've watched, and enjoyed Oprah.

Yesterday it was Marc Jacobs and Barbie.

Today: Grey's Anatomy, Rachel Ray and Oprah's friend Gail's obsession with a July 2005 GQ article, The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die.

No surprises with the LA ones, the Counter and Houstons-- while I haven't been to either, I've certainly heard of them...No wait, I've been to Houstons once. I didn't eat. But I ate off other people's plates. Mediocre and overpriced I think was my finding. I didn't try the hamburger though.

But SF offers me a restaurant I haven't heard of: Burger Joint. And it looks just like my kind of restaurant.

So, if i survive my new Oprah habit and still manage to keep my own personality, watch out! Burger Joint, I'll be seeing you at the end of March!

Damn you, Los Angeles!

I'm going to celebrate Mardi Gras, whether you like it or not! Yea for purple, green and gold!

I don't get it. This place is supposed to be all about decadence, cars, money, houses, beaches... right? So where's the boobs and feathers!

I don't know what's in a King Cake (babies, I think), but I may well just make one this afternoon. Before my long night of drinking.

I can't remember the last time I gave anything up for lent. But for some reason, today. I really feel the need to celebrate.

Lydia: I finally found the perfect occasion to wear that weird pearl thing from H&M.

News Roundup

Thanks to Stephanie for sending me this story straight off the wire 2 days ago. And thanks to the Seattle Post-Intellengencer for putting it online.

Belgian librarians use love to get readers

It could be a Valentine's setting at any restaurant or bar: Young couples drink red wine and chat eagerly at intimate tables aglow in candlelight and adorned with flowers...Singles who like to read are descending upon libraries across Belgium as part of an experiment in what two librarians have dubbed "lib-dating."..."Basically it's speed-dating, but in a new setting - with books."

And, can you believe John Bogert is podcasting?!?

Honestly, I'm amazed, for quite a few reasons

1. He's old, and proud of it. New fangled things and him don't go together.
2. His target audience must be people like my mom, someone who doesn't read the paper online, has never heard the word podcast, and has no interest in such things. And even if she wanted to, would probably fail at trying to listen to the file anyway.
3. The DB only got into the newspaper databases like a month ago. ProQuest, I think. Until then, you actually had to go to the library and get articles the old fashioned way. Who knew they'd be rolling out the audio? Their website still needs a lot of work, especially with the searching. The previous 2 weeks are available for free, but good luck finding a week old article if it's been booted off the front page for the section.
4. Even if they were ready with the technology, you'd think they'd start with Daniel DeFord (thanks google cache) (and here's his Xanga) He's got the nerd and the technology thing down. On more than one occasion he's writen about the tragedy of when his internet or cable tv goes down. NOTE TO DB: Why isn't he listed as a columnist? He's the only good one you've got. NOTE TO DANIEL: You don't have a single listing that comes up on a technorati search, so you're gonna find me sooner or later. I'll totally take you out for a drink next year, when you turn 21.
5. Oh yeah, John Bogert sucks.

At least the blurb on the internet has it right. Stephanie, did you write this?:

Whether you think he's an inspiration or an idiot, you'll get more of the story behind the story as he hashes out the details with his editor, C.J. Fogel.

Happy V-Day

Tonight, I'll be drowning my sorrows in my cataloging homework.

But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't have a happy V-day.

Maybe 80% Dangerous?

Cal course has students saying 'Go Bears!’
UC Berkeley class teaches history, lore of school's mascot

I assume this is a decal class

"I thought students should come out of Berkeley saying, 'Ah, now I understand why the bear is our mascot,'" Wilson said. "The bear is the largest and most dangerous animal we have here in California. It is a powerful animal, and people wanted to be associated with the strength of the bear. "So we'll explore the origins of Oski, but also examine texts from different cultures, bear-related sagas from Iceland and the Scandinavian middle ages, a tale about polar bears in the Tower of London, a 19th century Danish novella called 'The Polar Bear,' a few Native American stories," she said. "Even Goldilocks."

Cake

Someone please explain this to me.

I saw a commercial for this Cake movie on Lifetime. It touted “for the first time on national TV” or the like. It’s a romantic comedy about a wedding magazine, or something.

Obviously my interested with piqued, because my number 1 girl crush, Sandra Oh, is in it. Along with Heather Graham, Taye Diggs, Cheryl Hines, and Oh’s Grey’s Anatomy co star Sarah Chalke.

I totally forgot about it, and caught the last 40 minutes today. And it was just as I expected a romantic, straight to video comedy would be. How exactly it got made, I just don’t know. And why all these stars got on board with some Real World director is beyond me. Can someone else explain? I guess Grey's Anatomy wasn't a show when they filmed, but honestly.

From what I understand, this was released in theaters in Israel and Canada. And for us, we get the Valentines DVD release date which promises to be at least sexy, because it has an R rating. I didn’t see anything in the last 40 minutes that could possibly be rated R. Well, except for the suggestion of Cheryl Hines performing oral sex under the table at an award ceremony. But I’m sure any romantic comedy wouldn’t get under the tablecloth with an infrared light, or anything.

And please, take advantage of Amazon’s Better Together deal, where you can buy this and Herbie for the low, low price of $39.98.

Update: Oops, It seems I can't tell my blondes on medical shows apart. It was a long week. All blondes look the same, anyway.

On the list

I'd just like to point out that the good people at Woot are now on my potential boyfriend list. The list includes, but is not limited to: boys who work for neopets, that Peter guy from Ruby's, and poor kicked off the show Karl.

Passwords are supposed to be an obstacle for evil h4X0r types, but what about the hassle for us reg'lar users? You can't use your dog's name or your wedding anniversary date – too obvious. You can't use the middle name of the Secretary of Transportation in office when you were born – you'll never remember it....

All this so nobody can log in as you and spend your Neopoints, or rearrange your fantasy NASCAR lineup?

'Maid in Japan' cafes treat geeks like lords

In America it's cosplay, in Japan it's just work.

In the cafes, girls dressed in frilly frocks inspired by comic-book heroines wait hand and foot on customers, mostly male, who might have once been obsessed with naughty schoolgirls and nurses.

Disney top of the class with 'High School Musical'

Kids will buy anything, apparently.

Here's an unusually long article about how well the High School Musical soundtrack is doing

By the time the first Friday-to-Sunday run of the movie was finished, Disney claimed more than 20 million unduplicated viewers of the movie.

The movie, a contemporary musical comedy in the vein of "Grease," was a ratings smash.
Umm, really?

Web Junk 20

VH-1 has a new show that involves taking video clips from the internet and putting them on TV. Let me repeat, they show video from the internet on television. Even if the clip was originally from a TV show, they don’t bother with tracking it down, they just show the pixely clip from the internet. And for some reason, I can’t stop watching.

Web Junk 20 is a partnership between VH-1 and ifilm.
You can see all the clips on ifilm. Or you can choose to watch the show. Both are annoying in their own ways.

There are plenty of things to complain about. The most notable is that it's a countdown show, but there's nothing to count down, not quality, not time, nothing. And it's not like the clips they're showing are new that week. Last week they showed the clip of the polar bear trying to eat the girl in the seal hat.

But the show is still amazing for what it is. Internet becomes TV. Sure, TV can be seen on the internet. But the internet seen on TV? That’s usually reserved for trash news stories about cyberstalking or lame sitcom dating plots…. Just another sign of the future…
