Ten Most Harmful Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries
Human Events asked a panel of 15 conservative scholars and public policy leaders to help us compile a list of the Ten Most Harmful Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries.
It doesn't say how the books are harmful, or the criteria used etc. It's not even a list of books these people dislike. It's a list of people who hold alternative viewpoints and therefore upset the judges.
Have any of these books been harmful to you? Know what books I think are harmful? the ones that give me paper cuts.
Honestly, the feminine mystique!

I think the publication assumes that the criteria will be pretty clear to its readers. These seem to be books that triggered or fueled social movements the arbiters found undesirable (Nazism, Communism, Feminism, the sexual revolution, touchy-feely educational practices, etc). They are harmful due to their role in shaping society and history, according to this conservative point of view. Actually, the list-makers seem to be more offended by Freidan's communism than her feminism, but then again, feminism is the movement that probably gained more from her book.
I agree with Matt that this would be more interesting if lots of different groups made lists like this to compare.
